Celebration Day 2018: ‘Sing a New Song to the Lord’

URC Music Network are hosting an Annual Celebration Day in York on Saturday 6th October 2018.

The theme for the day is ‘Sing a New Song to the Lord’ and it will give opportunity to think about refreshing worship with new ways of singing old songs, and using new songs in our worship. There is opportunity for participants to offer new words or music – or both – for us to look at and learn together, and for us to share in the wealth of experience of those present.

The programme is made up of workshops entitled ‘Making Old Songs New’, ‘Singing our Faith’ and ‘Finding New Ways to Sing to the Lord’, and includes opportunity to share in music and worship together. The Celebration Day is taking place at St Columba’s URC, Priory Street, York.

Three workshop leaders are leading our sessions:

  • Alex Walker: a lay preacher, church secretary and interim moderator from Leeds. He has been leading worship for over twenty years, developing a modern yet accessible style of multimedia worship, keeping the core message of the scriptures at its heart.
  • Laurence Wareing: a freelance writer, editor and producer based in Scotland. Since 2011 he has edited the Methodist website Singing the Faith Plus, which supports and complements Singing the Faith Methodist hymn book.
  • Rev’d Anne Sardeson: Training officer for Thames North Synod. She plays guitar and ukulele regularly with an acoustic folk band at Clapton Park URC in Hackney, London, and writes words with music, words without music and music without words and misses singing in a choir!

We’re also hearing from Rev’d Alison Micklem, minister of St Columba’s URC, who recently published a book about her father, Caryl Micklem. Alison will give us some insight into ‘A Hymnwriter’s Muse’ and will be around to talk further about her book.

There will be opportunity for organists to play the organ at St Columba’s during the lunch break. Details about the organ can be found here.

Anyone wishing to offer a new set of words or music are invited to send these in beforehand – preferably by email to urcmusicwebsite@gmail.com – and they will be compiled for use on the day.

The day costs £10, taken on the day. Tea and coffee refreshments are covered by the cost, but participants should bring their own lunch.
