Music at General Assembly

We experienced a rich variety of music at General Assembly. Separate from the big ‘set-piece’ worship sessions where guest organists played on Nottingham’s Albert Hall organ, Ray Adams was asked to accompany morning and evening worship sessions on the piano. Trying to keep the choice of music for such occasions relevant to the theme and suitable for the time of day and mood of Assembly, he chose the following:

  1. Improvisation (by Ray Adams) on ‘The love of God comes close’ (tune ‘Melanie’ – the original melody by John Bell) (Ancient & Modern: hymns and songs for refreshing worship [2013] #466)
  2. Harold Darke: Andantino (from Little Organ Book in memory of Hubert Parry, Banks Music Publications, p. 28)
  3. Owen Alstott: ‘Gather us together’ (OCP Choral Series)
  4. S. Bach: ‘Jesu, lead my footsteps ever’ (from Christmas Oratorio – English words by C.S. Terry: Church Anthem Book – number 43, pp. 213-216)
  5. Karl Jenkins: ‘Healing light: a Celtic Prayer’ (from ‘The Peacemakers’, Boosey and Hawkes Music Publishers Ltd, p. 37)
  6. John Rutter: ‘I will sing with the Spirit’ (SATB) Oxford University Press 1994

The hymns chosen by the Moderators’ chaplains for these Assembly worship sessions were:

  • The love of God comes close (tune: Rhosymedre – Rejoice & Sing #107)
  • Christ be in my waking (Ancient & Modern: hymns and songs for refreshing worship [2013] #606)
  • Bless the Lord, O my soul (Matt Redman: 10,000 Reasons)
  • Lead us, heavenly Father lead us (tune: Mannheim – R&S #543)
  • As sisters, brothers, called by Christ (words: Jocelyn Marshall from A Singing Faith – tune: St Peter R&S #277 ii)
  • The Lord’s my shepherd (music: Stuart Townend – Complete Mission Praise #1008)
  • This is a day of new beginning (words: Brian Wren – Church Hymnary 4 – #526; tune: Spiritus Vitae – R&S #302)

Additional Music (chosen but unused)

  1. John Marsh ‘Benedictus’ (Meditations: a collection of reflective music for organ, Kevin Mayhew, p. 56)
  2. Louise Vierne: ‘Lied’ (Three pieces from Opus 31 for organ: arr: Bryan Hesford, Fentone Music Ltd, p. 6)
  3. Ennio Morricone: Theme from ‘Cinema Paradiso’ (piano version downloaded)
  4. John Rutter: ‘A Gaelic Blessing’ (SATB) Oxford University Press

with further possible improvisations on:

  • Colin Gibson: ‘Touch the earth lightly’ (Alleluia Aotearoa – The New Zealand Hymnbook Trust 1992 – #143)
  • Martin Nystrom: ‘As the deer pants for the waters’ (Complete Mission Praise – #43)
  • David J. Evans: ‘Be still for the presence of the Lord’  (Complete Mission Praise – #50)
